Power BI – EUP Analytics template – Connect to SCOM
Introduction
A free Power BI template is available to analyze EUP data. All necessary steps to download the EUP Analytics template and connect the template to the SCOM data warehouse are explained in this article.
After connecting the EUP Analytics template to the SCOM data warehouse, data is loaded into the Power BI file. This file, including data, can be shared (i.e. by e-mail or on a file share) but also published to the Power BI Service. Publication requires a Power BI account, for more information see: Self-service sign up for Power BI.
Prerequisites
To continue this article, the prerequisites below should be met:
SCOM is running, including the End-User Performance management pack
Microsoft Power BI desktop is installed, for more information see: Download Power BI
An account is available with privileges to connect to the SCOM data warehouse
Steps
Follow the steps below to connect the EUP Analytics template to the SCOM data warehouse:
Open the file (‘EUP Analytics.pbit’) on a system allowed to setup a SQL connection to the SCOM data warehouse
After opening the file, the screen below is visible:
Change the parameter ‘Servername DWH’ to the FQDN and instance name hosting the SCOM data warehouse. For example ‘server1.contoso.lan\MSSQLServer’
Change the parameter ‘Databasename DWH’ to the name of the SCOM data warehouse. The default name is ‘OperationsManagerDW’
Change the other parameters depending on your needs
Click ‘Load’
Power BI starts loading the data into the Power BI file
The first time a connection is made, Power BI needs credentials. The window below is opened:
Enter the required credentials and click ‘Connect’
The message ‘Encryption Support’ as shown below could appear. Currently, a SQL connection does not support encryption. When using an unencrypted connection is not an option, this template is not usable at the moment. Click ‘OK’ to continue
Depending on the Power BI settings, a message about running stored procedures could be shown. If so, click ‘Run’ to continue
