Installing and Upgrading

Upgrade

Here the upgrade of the End-User Performance Management Pack is described. First, complete all preparation activities before upgrading the End-User Performance Management Pack. Management Pack upgrade describes the steps to upgrade the End-User Performance Management Pack, and Post upgrade steps the steps to be taken after upgrading the management pack.

Preparation

Before the End-User Performance Management Pack is upgraded, export all management packs containing overrides for the End-User Performance Management Pack.

Important note: A new license file is needed for version 1.5.x.x, please contact The Backbone support before upgrading to this version.

Management Pack upgrade

Upgrade the End-User Performance Management Pack by carrying out the following steps:

  1. Open the SCOM Console
  2. Go to the Administration pane and choose Installed Management Packs
installed management packs
  1. Select the action Import Management Packs
  2. Navigate to the installation folder containing the new version of the management pack and select the following four files:
  3. TheBackbone.SMP04.Discovery.mp
  4. TheBackbone.SMP04.Library.mp
  5. TheBackbone.SMP04.Monitoring.mpb
  6. TheBackbone.SMP04.Reports.mpb
  7. Press Install to upgrade the End-User Performance Management Pack
import management packs
  1. Press Close to close the window

Update Configuration for Azure Log Analytics upload

When the management pack has been updated and data has been uploaded to Azure Log Analytics the config.xml file must be changed by following these steps:

  1. Open the config.xml file on the collector in a text editor
  2. Search the <oms> key
  3. Change this to <oms id="a descriptive name> e.g. <oms id="log1">
  4. Search and replace uploadtooms="true" with uploadtooms="a descriptive name" e.g. uploadtooms="log1". See EUP Configuration File for details.
  5. Save and close the config.xml file
  6. Restart the Microsoft Monitoring Agent Windows Service

Post upgrade steps

After upgrading two steps might be necessary depending on the current configuration and usage.

As of version 1.1.0.0, the default EUP Collector Path is changed to %PROGRAMFILES%\The Backbone\The Backbone End-User Performance MP. If an upgrade from version 1.0.0.0 is performed and no override is created for the EUP Collector Path, the EUP Collector Path will change to the new default value. To make sure the EUP Collector keeps processing files, perform one of the two steps described below:

  • Copy the config.xml and license.lic to the new default EUP Collector Path and make sure all simulation scripts output all data to the same path
  • Create an override to configure the EUP Collector to use the old default path. See Changing the EUP Collector Path for instructions on how to create an override for the EUP Collector Path

In version 1.2.0.0, the object name of the performance collection rules is changed. Custom performance views, dashboard widgets, reports, etc. that have been configured to select performance counters based on the simulation name as object name will not work anymore. After upgrading the management pack, those custom visualizations need to be changed to reflect the new object names.
